After testing cheap guitar hangers, I designed a modern solution

Hey, welcome to Strumland! Thanks for stopping by. Quick intro about me - my name is Ryan and I'm a guitar player and industrial designer from Asheville, North Carolina. I love collecting and playing cool guitars, gear, artwork, and vinyl records.

Three years ago, my family moved into a new house and I was excited to finally hang a couple of my guitars up on the wall. So I searched for guitar wall mounts on Amazon and bought a fairly standard looking one with mostly positive reviews. When I got it up on the wall I could see that my heavy Stratocaster was literally bending the wire and I couldn't possibly trust my guitar on it. So I bought another more expensive model that was a little more stylish. After I installed it, I discovered that my Stratocaster would only hang crooked. It stuck out like a sore thumb on the wall. It was a cool wood guitar hanger but it unfortunately didn't swivel and so I probably should have known better.

After some more research and reading what must have been thousands of product reviews, I bought what I thought would finally be the best option. Fast forward a couple months and I noticed the neck of my Yamaha classical guitar was starting to show some marks where it had been resting on the hanger. This guitar wasn't overly expensive, but it was sentimental. It was a student model from the late 1950s, but it sounded awesome and was well preserved. I was upset, so I emailed the company. They pointed me towards a small disclaimer on their website which noted their foam material was not recommended for some vintage lacquer finished guitars. Sigh.

Being the design nerd that I am, I started researching guitar finishes and the materials being used in competitive products. I found that a lot of the foam and rubber materials used in other hangers and stands were made with material chemistries that are not universally friendly with the wide spectrum of guitar finishes that exist out there.

At this point, I'm already committed to the challenge of designing a new solution to hang my guitars. I needed a versatile guitar hanger that was:

    • Solidly built with high-quality materials that would keep all my guitars safe
    • Modern looking and right at home next to my artwork and furniture
    • Stronger than necessary but also minimal in form
    • Would complement my space but showcase my guitars
    • Stand the test of time since I was putting small holes in the wall
Cue the classic inventor's journey with lots of sketching, prototyping, testing, dead ends, persistence, calls with material suppliers, manufacturers, and more. There were plenty of failures, aha! moments, and late nights. Fast forward another 3 years and I am finally ready to share what I've been working on!
